NEWS : Lagos Acquires Land In 3 States For Farming. To Link The SW States With Train.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said that the state government has acquired land in Ogun, Ondo and Osun states for farming.
Ayorinde told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the land was acquired for large scale mechanised farming.
The commissioner, who did not disclose the quantity acquired, said the state was planning to acquire more land in Oyo state.
Lagos has the smallest land mass in the country, 23 per cent of that land is water. Lagos decided to acquire land elsewhere for agriculture.
The decision has to do with economic integration of the South West states.
Lagos has just been admitted into the ODUA Group, comprising all the five states in the zone.
What this means is that, if there is economic integration among the six states in the South West, Lagos with its financial status can expand in the area of agriculture in those states,” he said.
According to Ayorinde, the plan is to get Federal Government`s approval to link the South West states with train service for effective haulage of agricultural produce.
He said it would be wise to move the produce with train service because trucks and trailers might not be enough to do the job.
The commissioner said Lagos and the others in the South West were considering economic integration through agriculture and most effective means of evacuating the produce.

NEWS : Ekweremadu Describes EFCC's Denial As Worrisome
– Senator Ekweremadu expressed surprise at the EFCC’s denial of his anti-corruption award
– He says he did not lobby for the award
– He says he will continue to do his work well in spite of EFCC’s decision
Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy Senate president has reacted to the decision of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to deny him of the anti-corruption ambassador award conferred on him by an official of the agency. On Tuesday, April 19, the deputy Senate president was designated by the liaison officer of the EFCC, Sulaiman Bakari as an ambassador of the agency but on Wednesday, April 20, the agency in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren denied the award and claimed the liaison officer acted on his own. Mr. Uche Anichukwu who is the special adviser to Ekweremadu on media and publicity in a statement said the denial of the award was unfortunate and worrisome. “We want to put it on record that the EFCC Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, Mr. Suleiman Bakari, and his team, applied for and subsequently paid a courtesy call on the Deputy President of the Senate in his Office on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. “Mr. Bakari, amongst other issues he raised, solicited the support of the Senate and National Assembly towards the anti-corruption crusade of the present administration, and even presented a frame with a bold picture of President Muhammadu Buhari, bearing the inscription: “If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria”. “Mr. Bakari also, on behalf of the Acting Chairman, management, and staff of the EFCC decorated Senator Ekweremadu as an Anti-Corruption Ambassador of the EFCC. “It is also a fact that the visit and decoration was captured in both pictures and video.” The statement also faulted the claim by the EFCC that it does not issue award to individuals “We wish to refer him (Uwujaren,) to December 7, 2007, when the Nuhu Ribadu-led EFCC conferred the Role Model Award in the Fight Against Corruption, on certain persons, including a former President of the Senate; a taxi driver; and a former Justice of the Federal High Court at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.” “Taking cognisance of the command structure of the agency, we also wonder whether Mr. Bakari could have acted on his own or read from a prepared text without recourse to the Commission, which he represents, especially as the visit and decoration was never solicited for in the first place. “We leave the rest to discerning members of the public to read in-between the lines and make their own judgments. “However, Ambassador or no Ambassador, the Deputy President of the Senate will not back down from his legislative efforts and advocacy as captured in his several public statements and lectures over the years. “He will continue to push for legal and institutional reforms such as Special Anti-Graft Courts; Security of tenure and financial autonomy for the EFCC and related agencies. “Only such reforms would fast-track justice and insulate the anti-corruption agencies from external interference and self-reversals.”
