NEWS: Power: 1,117MW lost to weak distribution network

Power supply from the national grid has dropped by 1,116.8 megawatts in the last one month since generation peaked at 4,810.7MW on August 25.
Generation fell to 3,693.90MW on Monday from 4,008.53MW recorded a day earlier, according to data obtained from the Federal Ministry of Power and the Presidential Task Force on Power on Tuesday.
Electricity generation stood at 3,780.71MW on Monday, according to the PTFP, compared to 4,098.31MW recorded on the previous day by the Power ministry.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has, however, attributed the slide in power supply to the inability of the distribution networks to supply all available power generated to households and businesses.
The Acting Managing Director, TCN, Dr. Atiku Abubakar, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said, “Right now, there is excess generation, which the distribution companies are not taking. The major issue is that the distribution system is not robust enough to take all the power that is being produced now.”
He noted that most of the distribution companies in the country had not improved on the networks they inherited from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria in November 2013.
“Since we achieved up to 4,800MW, it means the transmission network is capable of taking that amount of power, but it cannot be sustained because if the distribution network cannot carry the power all at the same time; it means the generation companies will have to switch off some of their units. So, we are having issues with distribution,” Abubakar said.
He added that the transmission system was currently capable of taking 5,300MW, noting that plans were underway to increase the capacity to 6,000MW by the end of the year.
Power supply to households and businesses in the country had recently dropped below the 4,000MW mark as 1,047.3MW was lost in seven days to August 31, when supply stood at 3,763.40MW, according to data from the PTFP.
The TCN had on August 25 achieved 4,810.7MW, which followed the record set the previous day, when 4,748MW was wheeled by its network.
The TCN recently said it would be engaging 30 local and foreign investors in its bid to raise funds to aid the expansion of the country’s power transmission infrastructure.
The company said it would be engaging the investors in its financing scheme as their capabilities in terms of technology and finances had been duly ascertained.
“The country will need to invest N15bn within two to three years to achieve 8,000MW. We have shortlisted them and now we are building the framework for repaying the investors,” Abubakar had explained.
According to him, the TCN has identified 130 ongoing projects that have been stalled as a result of lack of funds and other challenges.
He said out of this number, the company had identified 30 projects that were critical.
Beyond waiting for the investors, he said the company was also looking inwards by talking to the government and others to raise funds for project execution.

NEWS: Senate in rowdy session as 83 members back Saraki

THE Senate, expectedly, had a stormy session on Tuesday as some members of the upper legislative chamber protested the passing of vote of confidence in the Senate president, Olusola Saraki, by 83 senators.
Tuesday was the Senate’s first plenary since the arraignment of Saraki by the Code of Conduct Bureau for false asset declaration. The senior lawmakers had been on break since August 13.
Members of the House of Representatives, however, on Tuesday, said they had chosen to support the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, conveyed the position of the House in an address to lawmakers as they reconvened in Abuja after a six-week annual recess.
There was uproar in the Senate as the senator representing Zamfara Central Senatorial District, Kabir Marafa, complained that he was denied the opportunity to air his own view before the Senate president subjected the confidence motion to vote.
Senator Babajide Omoworare also protested the inclusion of his name as a co-sponsor of the confidence vote in Saraki.
Omoworare, representing Osun East Senatorial District, said his consent was not sought even as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business.
He later, in a statement, dissociated himself from the vote of confidence passed in Saraki.
In an electronic mail to one of our correspondents, Omoworare said he was not contacted before his name was included in the list of 84 senators, who passed votes of confidence in Saraki.
He had then moved that his name should be struck out of the motion.
The motion for the lawmakers to pass vote of confidence in the Senate president was moved by an All Progressives Congress member representing Niger East Senatorial District, David Umaru, on behalf of 83 others.
The motion, reportedly endorsed by 48 Peoples Democratic Party senators and 35 APC senators, was passed by overwhelming shout of ‘ye’ by the lawmakers.
It was the second confidence vote in Saraki in as many as two months. Eighty-one out of the 108 members of the Senate passed a similar vote on July 28
Umaru, while moving the motion, had noted alleged interference in the affairs of the senate “by detractors and media propaganda against senators, the senate and its leadership for selfish politicians.”
He said the Senate would not allow itself to be distracted and that it would not succumb to blackmail in the course of carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
He therefore called on innocent Nigerians, groups and political associations not to allow themselves to be used by any person or persons to intimidate or blackmail the Senate and its leadership.
But Marafa, who is the spokesperson for the Senate Unity Forum, a group opposed to the leadership of the Senate by Saraki, caused an uproar by noting that Saraki was only calling on his supporters to contribute.
Marafa, who was later recognised to speak after Saraki had ruled on the motion, cited order 53 (5) of the Senate Standing Rule, which forbids the Senate from discussing any issue before the court.
The insistence of Saraki that Marafa should also read the provision of Order 53 (6), which equally forbids any senator from raising any issue upon which the Senate president had ruled upon, degenerated into an open confrontation between the two lawmakers.
While Marafa argued that Saraki deliberately denied him an opportunity to talk before he ruled on the issue, the Senate president stood his ground and ruled the Zamfara senator out of order.
An angry Marafa consequently stood up and accused Saraki of giving only his loyalists the opportunity to speak on the floor and the resultant reactions from both pro- and anti – Saraki senators disrupted the deliberation on the motion on the outbreak of cholera moved by Senator Soni Ogbuoji.
An APC member representing Bauchi Central, Senator Issah Missau, climbed his seat and shouted on Marafa to “shut up and sit down” and Marafa responded by threatening to beat up Missau.
At the height of the confusion in the chamber, the immediate past Senate president, David Mark, stood up and quietly walked out.
In the ensuing confusion, Saraki called on the Sergeant-at-Arms to bring the proceedings to order but some of Marafa’s colleagues in the SUF, led by Senator Ahmad Lawan, sent back the Sergeant-at-Arms, saying the situation was under control.
Marafa was thereafter led out of the chamber by some senators who took him to the office of Senator Olusola Adeyeye (Osun Central) and barred him from speaking to journalists.
The aggrieved senator later returned to the chamber and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, apologised on his behalf to the Senate.
The Senate spokesperson, Senator Dino Melaye, while addressing journalists after the plenary, lamented “the unruly behaviour of Marafa” and warned that the Senate would take necessary disciplinary action against him in future if he repeated such attitude.
Melaye said, “The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, in session, apologized to Nigerians for the unbecoming attitude of Senator Marafa. That act is disgraceful, unacceptable and condemnable and that the senate regrets that.
“We want to assure Nigerians that this will be the last time that the Senate will condone such misbehavior. His action contravenes Section 56 of the Standing Rule of the Senate but his misbehavior is regrettable.
“The Senate will do everything within its powers to ensure that the situation does not repeat itself and where it is repeated, it would be met with stiff adherence to the rules of the Senate.”
Saraki alleges external influence
Saraki on Tuesday fingered “certain individuals outside the Senate” as responsible for his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
He spoke while addressing Senators in plenary.
He said, “I wish to reiterate my remarks before the tribunal, that I have no iota of doubt that I am on trial today because I am the president of the Nigerian Senate, against the wishes of some powerful individuals outside this chamber.
“But what is clear to me also is that the laws of Nigeria and the rules of the National Assembly give consideration only to the wishes and desires of those of you who are here today as members of the Senate; to elect as you wish, one of your peers as President of the Senate.
“This, in your wisdom, is what you have done by electing me to be the first among all of you who are my equals. The laws of Nigeria do not give any consideration to any other forces outside the Senate in the election of its president.
“To yield the ground, on this note, is to be complicit in the subversion of democracy and its core principles of separation of powers as enshrined in our constitution.”
He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for refusing to interfere in the election of the National Assembly leadership even in the face of enormous pressure on him to do so. He said Buhari had “proved quite concretely that he is indeed a born-again democrat.”
“Too many people have fought and died for the democracy that we enjoy today,” he noted.
He said the senators would not be honoring heroes and heroines of democracy and their memories if they should allow the sad chapters of our history to continue to repeat themselves.
He said, “As for me, I am prepared to do my duty in the defense of our democracy and in safeguarding the independence of the National Assembly.
“My duty, as I see it, is to do justice and honor to the memory of those who have paid even higher prices to give us this democracy and this Constitution. Primarily as a senator of the Federal Republic and as the Senate President I owe it to this Senate to stand strong in the face of relentless persecution.’’
House votes for anti-graft
The House of Representatives said on Tuesday that it wholly supported the anti-corruption war of the Federal Government and its decision to cleanse the polity of sleaze.
But, the House urged “great circumspection” in the ongoing prosecution of the Senate president over alleged corruption charges “in order to maintain proper focus in the pursuit of the common good.”
The House commended Saraki for submitting to the jurisdiction of the CCT.
Dogara, who spoke on behalf of his members, said, “The barometer of the polity has been on the rise of late because of certain developments concerning the arraignment of the President of the Senate.
“While commending the President of the Senate for submitting himself to the jurisdiction of the Code of Conduct Tribunal in the recognition that no person is above the law, I wish to caution that there is need for great circumspection in times such as this in order to maintain proper focus in pursuit of the common good.
“In this regard, I wish to commend you, my dear colleagues, for the maturity of avoiding further escalation through media commentaries.
“We commend and fully support the effort of government towards sanitizing the polity through the war against corruption, impunity and other vices.”
Dogara noted that the House expected institutions created by Acts of the National Assembly to be fair and ensure that justice was seen to have been done at all times.
He noted that acting to the contrary could be a stain on the success of democracy.
The Speaker added, “As legislators with the mandate of making as well as reforming the law, we expect that these institutions, which are the creation of these laws, would prove their capacity for fairness, justice and strict adherence to the rule of law in order not to endanger our democracy.
“I am confident that our justice system has the capacity to do justice to all citizens. In any case, the legislature remains the bulwark in defense of our democracy, fundamental human rights and rule of law.”
To his colleagues, Dogara reminded them of the fact that they must lead by example by being above board to be able to perform their duties of over-sighting ministries, departments and agencies of government.
“We must at all times remind ourselves that we are equally been over-sighted by the people whose mandate we hold and indeed ultimately by God.
“We will therefore do well to adopt the righteous doctrine of leadership by example, only then shall we be able to face accountability with confidence,” the speaker said to his colleagues.
‘Confidence vote not consequential”
Reacting to the development in the Senate on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Debo Adeniran, described the confidence vote in Saraki as “unfortunate and tragic.”
Adeniran said the development confirmed that the legislature was made up of people who might not allow Buhari’s anti-graft war to succeed.
He said, “It is a very sad development, no doubt. Of course, they even knew that the gentleman had several corruption and fraud allegations against him before they elected him, and that is the tragedy in which Nigeria has found itself; to have a legislature that has a preponderance of people of doubtful integrity and that will water down whatever dream that the executive led by President Muhammadu Buhari has.
“Well, they can go ahead and pass any vote of confidence that they want to pass but I believe that at the fullness of time, Nigerians will rise against all the looters and they will stone them on the street.”
A former Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Monday Ubani, described the action of the lawmakers as “disgraceful and one targeted at further rubbishing the country’s image in the comity of nations.”
Ubani said, “The way we behave in this country is sometimes very disgraceful. We should stop making ourselves a laughing stock in the comity of nations. What is the meaning of vote of confidence? If a man has any criminal issue to sort out with the judiciary, what effect does that have on the judicial process? It has no effect whatsoever; they are just wasting their time.
“If the man has a case to answer with the judiciary, he should go and clear himself. If the judiciary says he is guilty, anybody can go and pass a vote of confidence; it will go to no issue.”
A Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Seni Adio, also said the vote of confidence passed in Saraki had no bearing on his trial at the CCT.
“What is happening in the National Assembly has no bearing on what is happening in court. The senators are not judicial officers and they are not a court of law. It is for the court to pronounce on the innocence or otherwise of a suspect,” Adio said.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Onueze Okocha, said what happened in the National Assembly would have no effect on the judicial process at the CCT.
He said, “What happens in court is different from what happens in the National Assembly. Whatever happens within the precinct of the National Assembly is basically a legislative activity and the legislators are at liberty to proceed as they see fit based on what their rules and order of proceedings indicate.
“The standard in every legislative house is that if the members of the house no longer have confidence in the elected leaders, the honorable thing for those leaders to do is to resign. It happened recently in Australia, where it led to the Prime Minister losing his position. It is a standard in legislative houses across the world; if lawmakers lose confidence in their leader, it naturally follows that the end of the road has been reached for that elected leader.”

NEWS: President Buhari Appoints Himself As Petroleum Minister

As the nation awaits President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial list, the President on Tuesday said he would head the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
President Buhari while addressing some select reporters in New York on Tuesday, after addressing a Global Leaders’ Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism, he will remain the Minister of Petroleum.
He said the step is being taken as part of efforts to sanitize Nigeria’s oil industry which is said to be plagued by corruption, massive fraud, and crude oil theft.
He said:
“I will remain Minister of Petroleum.
“I will appoint a minister of State for Petroleum”.
Buhari restated his determination to sanitize Nigeria’s oil industry and free it from corruption and create more transparency.
He said that his first step in sanitizing the petroleum sector has already begun with the appointment of a new management for the NNPC and said that the prosecution of those who misappropriated NNPC’s funds is already in the works.
Buhari, who took office at the end of May promising to fight corruption, has made it clear he wants to overhaul the oil sector in Africa’s biggest economy, which provides the government with about 70% of its revenue.

NEWS: Why I Married 18 Year Old Adamawa Princess – Emir Of Kano

Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II has responded to criticisms following his marriage to 18 year old Sa’adatu Barkindo-Musdafa last week. In a private email sent to select people which has leaked to many social media platforms, he explained why he decided to marry Sa’adatu.
Read below
“I am sure NC members all have their views and have kept quiet out of (appropriate) deference to our right to make our individual choice. Obviously I do not need to explain anything to anyone in a purely personal matter but a few points are worthy of note:
1. The lady in question is 18 and thererfore legally of age to marry under all laws and certainly inder Muslim law
2. She is proceeding for her undergraduate education in the UK in january. She had an A in computer science in her O levels and plans to get a degree in computer science
3 each and everyone of my wives is a university graduate and some have worked and fhen stopped and in each case the choice was purely theirs
4. It is a tradition in Kano that emirs and princes in choosing wives consider issues beyond the individual. The family is in every sense a social unit. My predecessor was married to princesses from Ilorin, Katsina and Somoto
5 The relationship between the late Lamido of Adamawa Aliyu Musdafa the father of the current Lamido is well known. Lamido Aliyu was the first emir turbanned after emir Sanusi I and they remained close until Sanusi’s death.
6. My own relationship with the current Lamido dates back to 1981 when he was Ciroma and commissioner for works. By the way the Lamido and I are not illiterates we know what we are doing and he does have a PhD in Engineering
7. My own mother was married in Adamawa and lived there for more than two decades and I have eight younger brothers and sisters from there
8 it is therefore natural that if I choose to marry from another kingdom Adamawa would be the first choice for me and I am extremely happy to strengthen these ling historical bonds
9. The young lady in question gave her free consent and even after the contract the wedding will not happen for a few years. By then she may be 21. If she freely consents to this I do not know on what moral grounds anyone has a grouse. She is an adult, she gave her consent, her education is not being in anyway interrupted.
10. The real issue is that people do not accept cultural difference. And you can see it in the approach to these issues. I am supposed to be urbane and western educated. Yes but i am not european. I am a northern Nigerian Fulani Muslim brought up in a setting exactly like the one my children are being brought up in.
If you read this and it improves your understanding of this issue that is fine. If it does not just remember it is not your life, it is not your daughter and you are not my wife therefore it is not your business.
I obviously cannot stoop to the level of responding publicly to these kinds of articles. I have always been an advocate of girls marrying after maturing. I personally like the minimum age of 18 even though i understand those who say 16 is fine and indeed this is the law in most so calked @advanced@ countries.
Is this something that I expect a european or western trained or feminist mind to appreciate or endorse? Not at all. But has any american been bothered about my views on men marrying men or women marrying women which frankly I find primitive and bestial? No and my views do not matter. These are cultural issues.
Even in Nigeria I have heard all this stuff as in Pius article about “north” and northerners. Again it is a failure to respect difference.
There are parts if this country where parents expect their daughters to live with their boyfriends for years and actually get pregnant before they marry. It has become culture.
We do not have that in the north and if your daughter gets pregnant before marriage she brings nothing but shame to the name. But we do not issue condemnations. We agree that this is how they choose to live. And i can give many other examples.
When people use the term libido they do themselves injustice. First of all it shows how they view women and marriage. Women are nothing but the object of sexual desire. Marriage is nothing but sexual gratification. Well I am sorry but in my tradition it is not.
Beauty and attraction rank third after religion and lineage in the choice of a wife. They see an 18 year old young lady. I see a princess of noble birth whose mother is also a princess, and who has been brought up in a good muslim home. This is the kind of woman that is prepared for hiving birth to princes and bringing them up for the role expected of them in society.
Martiage is both social and political. Expanding the links of kano which have already been established by my predecessors through inter marriage with katsina, sokoto, ilorin, katagum, ningi, bauchi etc to adamawa is an important and significant step and this is obvious to anyone with a sense of how royal families work and Ibn Khaldun’s sociological concept of Asabiyyah.
When the emir of Kano marries it has to be something beyond what he personally desires to what is appropriate for that position and the expectations of the people he represents. You don't just pick up any girl on the street.
And by the way for those who shout libido s*x is cheap and available everywhere in all shapes and sizes and all colors if that is what they want. And all ages too. Marriage is a very different proposition.
The mother of your children has to be something other than, or at least much more than a mere object of sexual fantasy. But if you do not know that you need to buy yourself a brain.
I have daughters. And they know they can only marry from certain backgrounds. I always prefer family. When my daughter wanted to marry mouftah baba ahmed’s son and she asked me, knowing my views on family, i told her mouftah is family.
And this is not about me and mouftah or me an hakeem or nafiu. No. It goes back to Baba Ahmed and Emirs Sanusi and Bayero. And the same rule applies to my sons. And it applied to me as well.
It is I am sure very strange that I should even bother to comment on this. But it would be hypocritical for me to just keep quiet so long as these things are being posted and commented upon explicitly or in a snide manner.
There was no secrecy in the marriage fatiha. The date was fixed and it was to be done in the central mosque after Friday prayers. The day before we had a tragedy in Saudi Arabia and decided the fatiha must be very low key as a mark of respect for the dead.
All traditional rulers in adamawa were there, as were governors and commissioners, members of my own emirate council and adamawa people. There is nothing here to hide or be apologetic about.
The emirs of adamawa have shown love to my parents and grandparents and it is a sign of my appreciation of their love that i marry their daughter. This is the highest statement of friendship and loyalty on both sides.
Again if you understand this this is fine. If you do not buy yourself a brain, A la Pius.
In any event this is my one and final and only comment on this. And I am making it out of respect for NC members.” MSII “

LOCAL NEWS: Saraki reportedly stoned in Ilorin, Eid prayers disrupted (PHOTOS)

The Eid prayer ground in Ilorin, Kwara state was thrown into pandemonium when the Senate President Bukola saraki was stone as he showed up for the Eid-kabir prayer. The anti riot police deployed to the ground were stretched beyond their limit as they couldn't keep the situation under control.
Over 50% of the people couldn't complete the prayer cos the PAS and the local radio station had to cut transmission to reduce the embarrassment .

Meanwhile,

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Kwara State has raised alarm that external forces and desperate politicians mobilized miscreants and thugs to the Ilorin Eid praying ground on Thursday in a failed attempt to embarrass the personality of the Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and his entourage were briefly in attendance at Ilorin Eid Praying Ground.

According to reliable information and the self-confession of one of the apprehended thugs, the miscreants and thugs were conveyed from a neighboring state and Lagos State to Ilorin on Wednesday.

They had planned to use sachets of pure water and other yet unidentified arms to cause confusion at the Ilorin Eid praying ground but it took the intervention of the vigilant and conscious people o‎f Kwara State to thwart the evil plan and  apprehended some of the thugs.

While this is our preliminary statement on the unfortunate incident, we wish to state that what some desperate politicians failed to achieve via electoral process at the National Assembly, what they also failed to achieve through all the politically-motivated traps against the Senate President, the same desperate politicians attempted to achieve it today at the Ilorin Eid praying ground but the evil plan was thwarted by the ever vigilant people of Kwara State.

We call on the Kwara State Police Command and other security agencies to immediately start clinical investigation on the activities of the imported miscreants and their sponsors. The investigation should start with the already-apprehended miscreants forthwith.

Signed:
Sulyman Buhari,
Publicity Secretary,
All Progressives Congress,
Kwara State.

WORLD NEWS: Deadly blast hits Yemen mosque at start of Muslim holiday

At least one blast tore through a mosque in Yemen’s rebel-held capital Sanaa Thursday, witnesses said, targeting Shiite worshippers during prayers at the start of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and leaving at least 25 dead.
The attack happened in the Balili mosque near a police academy in Sanaa, which is controlled by the Houthi Shiite rebels, according to witnesses. Some reports said there had been two explosions, both by suicide bombers.
At least 25 people were killed, medics told the AFP news agency, with dozens more wounded.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Yemeni capital has been shaken by a string of bombings of Shiite mosques in recent months claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.
The radical Sunni Muslim group considers Shiites to be heretics and has also claimed bombings of mosques in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have seized several regions of Yemen including Sanaa which they overran a year ago.
Pro-government forces backed by Saudi-led air strikes have recently managed to wrest back some southern provinces, including Yemen’s second city of Aden.
The Islamic State group and the Yemen-based branch of its jihadist rival Al-Qaeda have exploited the turmoil to boost their activities in the impoverished country.
The bombing came as Muslims around the world celebrated Eid al-Adha – the feast of sacrifice – which Muslims mark by prayers in congregation at mosques.

WORLD NEWS: Death toll rises to 453 in Saudi Hajj stampede

At least 453 people have been killed in a stampede at the annual Hajj pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia’s civil defence directorate said, as the death toll continued to rise.
The directorate said at least 719 other pilgrims were injured in Thursday’s stampede, which took place in Mina, on the outskirts of the holy city of Mecca.
The injured have been evacuated to four different hospitals in the Mina region, according to a civil defence spokesman.
Mina is where pilgrims carry out a symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing pebbles against three stone walls. It also houses more than 160,000 tents where pilgrims spend the night during the pilgrimage.
Al Jazeera’s Basma Atassi, reporting from Mina, said the incident took place in a street between pilgrim camps.
“The street where it happened is named Street 204. This stampede did not happen at the site of the ‘stoning of the devil’ ritual, which was happening today.
“During and after the stampede the pilgrims continued to flock into Mina to perform the devil stoning ritual.”

GBO-TEMI literally means LISTEN TO ME in yoruba. The Afro pop sensation, KRISTALITE who is under the management of GBEFUN SYNERGY ENTERTAINMENT sure knows how to hook you down with his melodious voice, forcing you to LISTEN.

Gbo-temi is the tale of a man who has been shunned totally by the woman of his dreams. It explains how he tries all his best to ensure she understands his resolve by making her listen to his words, his heart, and his voice.

We were opportuned to schedule an interview with Kristalite at the GBEFUN SYNERGY Mansion and we forced him to shed light on the story behind the track. The very shy KRISTALITE was apparently driven by love. In his own words," when woman no gree look your side, no be ear remain wey she go use hear? O GBODO GBO-TEMI" (simply meaning: " when a woman has refused to notice you, its her ears that are left to get her attention, she must listen to me)

Further revelations actually explained his resolve to sing this masterpiece which will surely become an anthem amongst lovers or should we say stubborn lovers, lol. So ,we want to seize this medium to tell the secret woman in KRISTALITE's life, LISTEN TO HIM O... same goes to every SISI EKO out there.
